Duct Air Leakage Testing (DALT) is the measurement of the air tightness of HVAC ductwork. Commercial and industrial ductwork is often tested to standards developed by organizations such as the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA).
Leaky supply ducts do not deliver air where needed. In addition, leaky return ducts bring in unconditioned air, which can cause problems such as humidity and contaminants.
Also, a leaky exhaust duct blows airflow from an undesired area out of the building, which lowers the amount of airflow being exhausted from the targeted area.
It is imperative for ductwork to undergo through DALT to ensure that the correct amount of airflow is reaching the air distribution to properly heat or cool the space.
